Ceres
The Roman name for Demeter, with whom she is identical. There is a story that when the Etruscans under Porsenna were attacking Rome the city was threatened with famine. The Sibylline Books were consulted, and they advised the introduction to Rome of the cults of Dionysus and Demeter. This advice was followed in 496 BC and the two gods were established on the Aventine Hill. For the legends about Ceres see Demeter. (Grimal, 1990)
