Dionysus

Dionysos, also known as Bacchus, was the Greek god of wine and revelry. (Kremer, 2025) Photo of a 1st-century A.D. artifact, likely a Roman version of a Greek original. The head is characterized by its androgynous youth and a diadem of ivy leaves, typical attributes of Dionysos. The hollow eyes were likely once inlaid with glass or precious stones.  The artifact was discovered in Rome in 2019, where it had been recycled and built into a medieval wall, Museo Nazionale Romano, Rome, Italy, 2025.
