King in Greek. The ancient Romans applied the Greek term to their law courts, with open spaces and monumental proportions. Today are churches honroed by the Pope as outstanding for reasons of history or beauty. Historic “major,” or greater, basilicas in Rome are St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Peter. Most other basilicas are called “minor,” or lesser. (Durkin, 2007)
