Today are churches honroed by the Pope as outstanding for reasons of history or beauty. Historic “major,” or greater, basilicas in Rome are St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Peter. Most other basilicas are called “minor,” or lesser. (Durkin, 2007)
