An art movement in the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Ashcan School is known for works portraying scenes of working-class daily life painted in a realist style. Artists in the loosely organized group included John French Sloan, Everett Shinn, Robert Henri, Theresa Bernstein, George Bellows and William Glackens.
