Operatied outside the canons of historic styles, yet it used elements of those historic precedents. Art furniture is characterized by certain motifs, mostly ahistoric: a stark contrast of solid areas and voids, the breaking up of flat planes into smaller units, a tendency to embellish, a variety of sumptuous materials used in combination. The aim of art furniture was to transcend style in order to achieve aesthetic effect. (Zukowski, 2006)
