floor plane

Since the floor plane supports our activities within a building, it should, of course, be structurally sound and durable. It is also an important design element within a space. Its form, color, pattern, and texture will determine to what degree it will define the boundaries of a space and serve as a visual ground against which other elements in the space can be seen. The texture and density of the material underfoot will also affect how we walk across its surface. (Ching, 1979)
