Longitudinal reinforcement placed in a concrete column to absorb compressive stresses, resist bending stresses, and reduce the effects of creep and shrinkage in the column. The effective cross-sectional area of vertical reinforcement should not be less than 0.01 nor more than 0.08 times the gross cross-sectional area of the column, with a minimum of four #5 bars for tied columns and a minimum of six #5 bars for spiral columns. (Ching, 1995)
