urban sprawl
The spreading out of activities and development from the city center, often to greenfield sites on the edge of cities or metropolitan areas. (Kremer, 2026) Problems of sprawl include: leap-frog development, pockets of decay, jobs/housing imbalances, deteriorating air and water quality, and clogged freeways and arterials. (Fitzgerald and Leigh, 2002)
