tower of silence
A tower, usually about 25 ft (7.6 m) high, on which the Parsees expose the bodies of their dead to be stripped of flesh by vultures; usually arranged so that the denuded bones fall through a grating into a pit, from which they are removed for burial. (Harris, 1977)
