telegraph station lamp

New York City Fire Department (FDNY) installed the spherical red glass globe atop the post to make the emergency alarm box highly visible to citizens and firefighters from down the block, especially at night. The globe is supported by a classic, ornate cast-iron pedestal painted in the standard FDNY dark forest green. It features elegant Corinthian-style acanthus leaf brackets flaring out directly beneath the lamp collar. These posts traditionally housed a red pull-handle alarm box below the lamp. Pulling the hook sent a specific telegraphic code directly to the central dispatch office to instantly route engines to that exact street corner.
