U.S. federal legislation requiring that historic bridges that are to be demolished during projects using federal funds be made available for donation to a “state, locality, or responsible private” entitites who agree to maintain them, and that the Federal Highway Administration make funds available to preserve bridges that are no longer used to carry traffic. (Bucher, 1996)
