Spanish Baroque
An extreme development of baroque architecture that evolved in Spain and its colonies in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Spanish baroque featured incredibly elaborate moldings (generally in white stucco) that were often repeated three or four times, like a series of little pleats, to create a scene of drama and excitement. Described as Churrigueresque after the Chrriguera family of Salamanca who were famous for their stucco plasterwork, the work was so sculpturally ornate that for many it bordered upon bad taste. The emergence of the Spanish baroque marked the end of the baroque and rococo periods. (Ambrose, 2008)
