The different types of functional space within a building. As their name suggests, the servant spaces are those which service and support the served spaces. The servant areas include the kitchens, bathrooms, circulation routes, storage and service areas, and heating and ventilation systems. The served spaces are those that are supported, such as domestic living rooms and bedrooms, office spaces and work stations, or retail showrooms. The terms were first coined by American architect Louis Kahn. (Ambrose, 2008)
