Many of the new states built capitols tohouse their elected officials and to serve as symbols of their new authority and prestige… In additionto the Virginia State Capitol, Jefferson is remembered for his unique architecturalachievement at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville… Many red-brick houses and courthousesthat derive from Jefferson’s architectural theories are found in Virginia and states where Virginians settled.
