Like the hazel, the hawthron was a shrub or small tree invested with magical properties in Europe. In classical times it was linked with Hymen, god of weddings. The flowers were used for marriage garlands, the wood for marriage torches. The association between its spring flowering and virginity led to folk superstitions that it protected chastity.
