Large heavy slate, or stone slab, bedded in mortar and laid as part of a course, slightly inclined, immediately above the eaves of a pitched roof above the gutter, thus providing an overhanging soffit and avoiding the necessity of sprockets, timber fasciae, or soffit-linings. (Curl & Wilson, 2016)
