A room, spacious lobby, or salon in a theatre, opera house, or other place of entertainment, provided for promenading and conversation between the acts or during intermissions in the entertainment. The term is more general in Great Britain than in the U.S., where the French word foyer is more commonly employed. (Sturgis, 1900)
