A city planning movement of the late 19th century and early 20th century inspired by the symmetrical, classical buildings and landscapes of the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago; largely the work of citizens’ organziations that pressed for progressive local government, urban park systems, and a monumental, classical city core as a means of improving the quality of life. (Bucher, 1996)
