An industry sprang up in America. At the very top end were tiles hand painted by working painters, like those of the Tile Club. Besides hand painting, decoration on tiles was transfer printed, molded and impressed. Rich, earth-toned glazes were preferred, and they puddled into depressions to create artful and realistic effects. (Bucher, 1996)
