Description
Austin Avenue is a major thoroughfare passing through the north-west corner of Albion. Formerly part of the main road between Detroit and Chicago, Austin Avenue provided a convenient connection to nearby Marshall to the East.

Heavy industrial facilities located along this road, most notably the second factory building for the Albion Malleable. In the 1960s an Industrial Park was added west of the Malleable within the city boundaries.

A small run-down commercial area is north of the former Albion Malleable factory where grocery stores and boarding houses for immigrant workers have been replaced by bars or vacated. This area has special significance with respect to waves of migration and immigration to Albion, the area is also an excellent example of early 20th century vernacular retail buildings. For these reasons these buildings should be preserved.

If one follows Austin Avenue three miles out of the city limits, signs offer direction to Starr Commonwealth, a nationally renowned treatment center for troubled youth and their families.
