Narrative Description
A clapboard, two-story structure in the Italianate style, the Smith-Gillespie House was built by Henry D. Smith, a prominent Albion hardware merchant and one-time City Treasurer in 1883. Smith’s grandson, Henry D. Brown, taught history at Albion High School prior to becoming curator of the Michigan Historical Collections and director of the Detroit Historical Museum.
