Marketlands – Winnipeg, Canada
Marketands is a project of the Centre Venture Development Corporation, meant to facilitate public private partnerships in downtown Winnipeg. Some interesting pre-vitalization activities occurred on the site. A shipping container complex provided space for community engagement to occur. Pavement painting with red arrows drew people towards the containers, and enlivened the paved area around them.
A design competition was held for the site in 2018. The following “Notice of Opportunity” was issued:
Open, international design competition for the redevelopment of 0.8 acres of land in downtown Winnipeg. A new urban destination, with a pedestrian oriented internal plaza, zero setback buildings, public, open, and permeable spaces at the gorund level, transparent residential connections with balconies or terraces and a granualr, intense, informal, urban market – one that enables local vendors to create their own environment, texture and character in a daylight-filled winter-city structure. The winning submission will receive CAD$100,000 prize with additional funds available for the completion of the schematic design stage. The winner will have the opportunity to enter into a formal contract for the full architectural design. The four finalists will receive an honorarium of CAD$10,000 each.
Marketlands Notice of Opportunity, 2018
Daoust Lestage Architects of Montreal submitted the winning entry. In included a new Market Building and a residential building beyond it. The market building was enclosed with the possibility for expansions on market day.
