A temporary wall constructed during excavation to hold the side walls of the hole in place; originally vertical sheeting held in place by horizontal walers, vertical shores or wallpieces, and diagonal rakers, and sometimes piles; in large 20th century excavations may have horizontal sheeting between vertical H-shaped steel piles, sometimes braced with steel sections, or may use sheet piles.
