underseepage

The flow of water through the ground beneath a structure like a levee, floodwall, or even a building foundation. This can happen when a high water level, such as during a flood, creates pressure that forces water to move through porous soil layers. Underseepage can weaken soil, cause erosion (sand boils), and lead to structural failure, so control measures are often implemented to prevent it. (Kremer, 2025)
