Saint Cabrini

Francesca Saviero Cabrini was born in 1850 in Italy. She founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. At the request of Pope Leo XIII, she came to the U.S. to minister to Italian immigrants, reaching New York City on March 31, 1889. Mother Cabrini went about founding schools, orphanages, and hospitals against great obstacles. Foundations in Nicaragua, New Orleans, and Brazil followed rapidly. She came to Seattle in 1903. Here, Mother Cabrini established an orphanage on Beacon Hill, and purchased the Perry Hotel at Boren and Madison that was transformed into Columbus Hospital (later Cabrini Hospital). Mother Cabrini became a U.S. citizen in Seattle and prayed frequently at St. James Cathedral during her time there. She died on December 22, 1917. She was canonized in 1948.
