rain garden

A rain garden is a planted depression that absorbs rain water from roofs, driveways, walkways, parking lots, and compacted lawn areas, and filters pollution into an engineered pond. The ponding water slowly filters into the ground, helping to recharge the water table instead of running off the pavement. It provides an opportunity for the water to evaporate back into the atmosphere. The soil and plants also help filter pollutants out of the water. (Kremer, 2025) Photo from Abingdon, Virginia, 2013.
