A soil that was previously subjected to a greater effective stress than it is currently experiencing. This is because the soil has undergone more consolidation in the past than its current load can account for. This history makes the soil denser, stronger, and less compressible, resulting in less settlement when a new load is applied compared to a normally consolidated soil. (Kremer, 2025)
