A museum that displays cultural artifacts outside of a building, especially as a simulated historical scene; may be a historic site with existing buildings, a collection of historic buildings and/or objects moved from elsewhere, or a reconstruction; first U.S. example established by the Essex Institute in 1909 at Salem, Massachusetts. Also known as heritage village, open-air museum. (Bucher, 1996)
