A tall, softwood tree with very hard, strong, stiff, pitchy wood with yelllowish orange to reddish brown heartwood and creamy pink or yellow sapwood; named for it svery long needles, found in southeastern U.S. from eastern Texas to North Carolina; used for heavy girders, light framing, sheathing, and millwork; lumbered primarily 1870-1915; Pinus palustris. Also known as Georgia pine, hard pine, southern pine, southern yellow pine, virginian pine, yellow pine. (Bucher, 1996)
