gas lighting
The artificial illumination of interiors and of streets and public squares by means of gas flames or jets. In houses, gas lighting is accomplished by means of more or less ornamental wall brackets and chandeliers adapted for burning illuminating gas in burners or tips, arranged singly or in clusters. The gas is conducted through fixtures in tubes, and the flow is controlled below the burner by a gas key. (Sturgis, 1900)
