A classical Roman symbol consisting of a bundle of wooden rods tied together with a crossing ribbon. In classical architecture—especially on civic and financial institutions like banks or courthouses—the fasces traditionally represents unity, strength, and authority (conveying that individual rods can be easily broken, but a bundle bound together is unbreakable). Bundles of Laurel leaves and organic botanical stems may fan out horizontally from behind the central ribbon, symbolizing victory, honor, and prosperity.
