A relatively lightweight timber frame building in which much of the structural rigidity is provided by rived clapboarding; has common rafters rather than principal rafters and purlins, and is typically supported on short piles or a ground sill; developed in the Chesapeake Bay region in the late 17th century. Also known as Virginia house. See also English frame. (Bucher, 1996)
