A special operating agency of the Cultural Development and Heritage Sector of the federal Department of Canadian Heritage (Canada), created in 1972 to establish a comprehensive inventory of Canadian museum collection and to provide collection management services to institutions in all regions of the country; mandate broadened by Canadian Museum Policy of 1990 to include the development of services that increase museum participation in the network, types of information available, analysis of technology and its use in museums, and better information standards; has three national databases: humanities, natural sciences, and archaeological sites.
