Buffalo will host the National Trust for Historic Preservation Annual Conference in 2011. Buffalo has benefitted from an increasing amount of attention in preservation-led regeneration efforts there. Successful preservation of several landmark buildings, including Sullivan’s Guaranty Building, as well as a substantial collection of intact buildings by leading national architects, makes Buffalo a particularly attractive location for this conference to take place. This all begs to ask, however, if Buffalo can pull off an event of this nature, why not Detroit whose building stock is arguably more numerous and historic than nearly any other place?

Buffalo has landed a prestigious historic preservation conference for Fall 2011.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced today that Buffalo will host the weeklong National Preservation Conference, getting the nod over Philadelphia and Hartford, Conn.
The exposure for Buffalo will help the city continue to change its image and attract new visitors, said Ed Healy, spokesman for the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“There will be at least 2,000 ardent preservation and architecture fans visiting Buffalo. They’re going to be blown away, and then go back to their respective communities and sing our praises. It’s an unbelievable opportunity for the city to show off,” Healy said.
The convention bureau, several preservation organizations and community foundations mounted a full-court press over the past 18 months to bring what Healy called the country’s “foremost preservation group” to Buffalo.
