The cup used for the wine at the celebration of the Eucharist. In early ages the chalice was sometimes made of glass or wood, more often of gold or silver, with a representation frequently of the Good Shepherd carrying the last sheep on His back. Especial care was taken that the brim of the chalice should not turn down. (Parker, 1896)
