Insulated electric wires wrapped with a protective sheath; in use by early 1930s, now the most common type of cable; originally rubber-insulated wires sheathed with paper and cotton braid impregnated with moisture and fire resistant compounds; sheathing replaced by thermoplastics after WWII.
