Acropolis of Athens

A defensive structure or citadel built on elevated ground close to the edge of a settlement. Acropolis derives from the Greek words acron (meaning ‘edge’), and polis (meaning ‘city’). They can be found throughout Europe from Bratislava in Slovakia to Edinburgh in Scotland. The most famous example is the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, which contains the Parthenon. (Ambrose, 2008)
