Called St. James the Less to distinguish him from St. James the Great, brother of St. John. James over time tended to be portrayed as short. Sources outside the Bible suggest that James the Less was the first Bishop of Jerusalem. There are two versions of his martyrdom. One is that he was sentenced to death by the JEwish Sanhedrin, thrown from the Temple in JErusalem, stoned, and sawn in two. Another is that he was beaten to death with clubs. James can be portrayed with either a saw or club. (Taylor, 2003)
