Saint Augustine
Augustine was born at Thagaste, in what is now Algeria, in 354. He studied rhetoric and philosophy and renounced the Christian faith he had been brought up in to follow the principles of Manichaeism. He taught grammar, rhetoric, and philosophy at Thagaste, Carthage, Rome, and Milan. In Milan, he heard the preaching of bishop Ambrose, who led him to convert and to be baptized in 386. He returned to Africa to live in a religious community in 388, and in 391 he was ordained priest. He became bishop of Hippo in 396. Wrote The City of God, an apologia in defiance of collapse of the Roman Empire He died in 430. He is depicted in the robes of a bishop, usually busy studying. PROTECTOR: Printers and theologians.
