A hardwood tree with tough, decay-resistant, coarse-grained, yellow to dark brown wood; originally native to the Appalachian Mountains and parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma, has been planted throughout U.S.; used for fence posts, poles, mine timbers, and occasionally for trim and millwork exposed to the weather; Robinia pseudacacia. Also known as black locust, yellow locust. (Bucher, 1996)
