Thin, continuous metal with a circular cross section and various insulation and protection systems used to carry electric current; typically copper and (after mid-20th century) sometimes aluminum; system types include armored cable, BX cable, flexible metal conduit, knob-and-tube, nonmetallic cable, office wire, porcelain cleats, rigid metal conduit, wooden cleats, wooden molding.
