In Chinese, the column-and-tie structure, in which the weight of a building’s roof is borne directly by columns rising towards the ridge and receiving the purlins. A set of horizontal, transversal tie beams penetrates the bodies of the columns, knitting them together into a framework. (Cole, 2017)
