Chi Rho

One of the Sacred Monograms. Stands for ‘Christ’ from the Greek work for Christ XPICTOC. The symbol is known as the Chi Rho, after the names for the Greek letters. In signifying the word ‘Christ’ rather than ‘Jesus’, the emphasis in the symbol is on Jesus’ position as the Son of God, the Messiah. The X in the Chi Rho can be used artistically as a reminder of the cross, and so the letters are often interlinked to make a single whole. (Taylor, 2003) Photo from Rome, Italy, 2025.
