black birch
A small birch tree with dark reddish brown, strong, hard, heavy, close-grained heartwood with wide, pale yellow sapwood; found in upland areas of the Appalachian Mountain region from northern Georgia to West Virginia, to souther Maine and scattered areas in Michigan and southern Ontario; used for millwork; Betula lenta.
