Biographical Information
Peter T. Mitchell became president of Albion College July 1, 1997. Since then, he has led a campus-wide envisioning process to position the school as a leading liberal arts college in the 21st century and has spearheaded several technology initiatives which have received national media coverage.
Prior to coming to Albion, Dr. Mitchell was president of Columbia College in Columbia, S.C., for nine years. During his tenure at Columbia, U.S. News and World Report named the college as one of the top five regional liberal arts colleges in the South. From 1983 to 1988, Dr. Mitchell served as president of Lasell College in Newton, Mass. A 1967 graduate of Albion, he holds a masters degree in English language and literature from the University of Michigan, an Ed.S. in instructional systems technology from Indiana University, and an Ed.D. in higher education administration from Northeastern University in Massachusetts.
Dr. Mitchell is married to the former Rebecca Putnam. They have a son, Peter Joshua; a daughter, Stephanie, who graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law; and a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Charles Goldman, who are the parents of two sons, Maxwell and Jacob.
