A wall constructed of quarried stone building blocks that have been squared and finished with a smooth surface; beginning in the 19th century the term indicates facing backed by rubble or brick walls; a single stone is referred to as a block of ashlar; types include bastard ashlar, coursed ashlar, random ashlar, random coursed ashlar, random broken coursed ashlar. Also known as broad stone. See also blocked, hacking, rough ashlar, rustication. 2. A stud used in ashlaring. (Bucher, 1996)
