In the Middle Ages, a structure with a raised platform from which public addresses could be made, laws and edicts proclaimed, and the like; usually, a steeplelike ornamental building ending in a cross. In some instances, this structure was high and elaborate enough to supply a pulpit or stand for the speaker, raised above the pavement at the base. (Jones, 1992)
