The reuse of Byzantine forms and decoration in the second half of the 19th century typically in churches. Characteristics include multiple domes often supported on high drums with square bases, round-arched windows, arcades with plain shafted columns, structural polychromy, bas-relief decorative work. and ample decoration. Byzantine Empire architecture developed from the 5th century A.D. and was characterized by massive domes with square bases, rounded arches and spires, and much use of glass mosaic.
