Steel plates placed around rockers, rollers, etc., on shoes to keep out dirt and dust. A thin piece of wood, leather, or fabric fitted to a journal-box to keep out the dust from the bearings, and to prevent the escape of oil and waste from the box. (Bridge, 2019)
