yoni symbol

The vulva is an important motif in Tantric Buddhist art, depicted as two adjoining arcs symbolizing the gateway to spiritaul rebirth. It symbolizes the Tantric view of the world’s existence as a continuous birthing process, and is paralleled by the notion of continuous ecstatic fertilization through the male organ, represented by the lingam. In Hinduism, the yoni can appear as a ring or rings at the base of the lingam dedicated to Shiva as creator. (Tressider, 2000)
